Commentary

About three years ago, I read two books well worth reading, though one gave far more satisfaction than the other. I began with 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte. I was captivated by the mystery, mezmerized by the exquisite, precise, colorful language, and utterly intoxicated by the mix of tragedy, virtue, and passion displayed in what is still one of my favorite novels.

After this positive start in my conquest for English literature, I was eager for similar material. I took up
'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte, and immersed myself in the vast network of love, hate, selfishness and sacrifice therein. It was as well written, enthralling, and moving as 'Jane Eyre', but it did not give me the uplifting and peaceful sensation of the latter. Rather I was depressed, and despondent; I couldn't think of anything else, yet my musings were not of a pleasant nature. I have heard it both praised, and critiqued; both censured and admired. It is such a powerful book; you love it or you hate it. I highly reccomend it, though I cannot say it is 'the best book I have ever read'.

I was made to read Jane Eyre in 7th grade. I was a poor reader. I was LOST!! I only caught up with the plot when we discussed it in class. So I can't say I loved, liked or even properly understood it. However, your glowing recommendation may have the effect of making me re-read it now that I may actually enjoy it. (I really like the other Jane Austin work I have encountered....... shocking since I am a BOY!

I was also made to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Maybe that was good too but I wasn't well qualified to say!! :)

Good for you!!!!!! Jane Austen ROCKS!!!! I know a lot of boys who would like her books, but they won't take the trouble to read them.

I've never read Tess of the D'Urbervilles, but I will (I love reading).

Oh, I forgot to add, the most striking thing about your comment was that line, "I really like the OTHER Jane Austen work I have encountered." Really???? I was under the delusion that we were discussing a book titled "Jane Eyre" writted by Charlotte Bronte. Upon re-reading my entry, I found no references to Jane Austen, though I agree she is a stupendous author.

I am prone to errors. I just read an online summary of Tess of the D. It sounds awful. I guess I didn't know what I was reading.

I am glad you forgive my illogical jump to Jane Austin.

I will be more careful in the future.

Very sorry to hear it. I was hoping there was another good series I hadn't heard of. Rats.

Guess what????? Julie likes 'Jane Eyre' as much as I do!!! She just read it, and 'Wuthering Hieghts'. To my relief, her sentiments run paralell with mine!!!

Random Fact: I love these word verification things!!!!!!:):):):):)
